Introduction

Remembering Florida past and present with short verse, Kevin takes you on a whirlwind trip through Florida’s nature, geography, ecology and fascinatingly unique history.

Florida is Florida, good and bad, a diversely unique state home to fascinating geological, ecological and climatic oddities as well as colorful populations of interesting people.  Kevin is a third generation Floridian who also is an aortic dissection survivor.

Defying survival odds and recovering from a massive tear in his aorta from the heart down into his legs, Kevin turns to short verse for help in dealing with dissection related cognitive function.  He is fond of telling others how his aortic mechanical valve’s loud heartbeat clicking sets the pace for each step, breath and thought with a 5-7-5 beat.

Following a very similar format to haiku’s 5-7-5 verse structure, Kevin succinctly explores an amazing amount of Florida’s colorful past, present and future.  His short verse creates a myriad of images in one’s mind, transporting us through time and across Florida’s truly unique landscape.

Modeled after haiku, senryu and haiga my poetry follows a Florida homestead type approach to the art of verse with no rules other three lines and roughly seventeen more or less breaths or syllables.

Finding long complicated and word filled paragraphs difficult  to comprehend, I hope to capture each verse’s subject matter depth and width in seventeen syllables more or less.  With short verse I want to takes the reader from the shores of the Panhandle around Pensacola, traveling next east to Tallahassee, then down the Suwannee River south along the eastern coastline and Atlantic seashore mid-state area, southwest and the southern terminus in Key West and the Dry Tortugas.

Bring your imagination and enjoy a light and hopefully deeply insightful journey across the Sunshine State through time and place with me here in my Florida short verse.  Feel free to share my Florida short verse with appropriate credit in non-commercial use.
